I have been more and more familiar with Kyoto now as I have photographed many sessions at this scenic city with cherry blossoms and maple leaves in full bloom, and also because it has become one of the most renowned destinations between newly weds to take pre-wedding photos. The ancient city is surrounded with vibrant and colorful scenery during all seasons of the year, and this series of photos were taken last year when the Koyo leaves were in beautiful autumn colors.

The arrangement to shoot in Kyoto was made pretty early as Natalie already had in mind what she wanted, and because the couples were both big fans of Japan especially Kyoto, finding the history and culture intriguing.

Whenever we do this type of seasonal shoots for pre weddings, we always have to factor the weather as a consideration, as the Sakura and Koyo leaves might not be in full blossom on the dates we are doing the shoot. The temperature in Kyoto last year seemed to be relatively warm as compared to before, so it did affect the foliage slightly, giving it a less vibrant look as compared to the previous years.

As this former imperial capital of Japan is filled with majestic shrines and temples, I decided to guide the couple to have their shoot at other spots, using many of the historic places as a backdrop for their photos. I always remind couples that the main focus of our shoot is to capture the beautiful fall foliage, but aside from these autumn leaves, there are plenty of surprises around every corner of this city that are breathtaking and picturesque and can be included in the shoot.

As a photographer I would always wonder what sort of elements are crucial when capturing wedding photos, and I have found out that the sense of reality is actually most important. The interactions among people and their feelings can bring out this sort of reality, thus, I try to focus on capturing these moments so even if strangers were to see these photos they would feel the joy and bliss on the couples special day, as if they were a part of the wedding too.

Davina and Rogers wedding is considered one of my recent favorites, and there were plenty of touching moments that I captured in this set of photo. The morning session took place at a church where they both exchanged their weddings vows in front of God and their closest family members and friends. I was mesmerized by the interior of the church as it was my first time here and the sky-high ceilings and warm lights gave me a sense of comfort. It was a bright and sunny day, and the sun was seeping through the landing glass partition when Davina walked down the aisle with her father in hand. The couple then shared their speech and footage with their audience and I felt like I truly understood them and the story they wanted to tell from the short clip.

The church ceremony took place the whole afternoon and we had to rush back to the evening dinner location for preparations. We didn’t have much time to take a lot of photos of the couples, but I felt like it wasn’t necessary as I always believe that the wedding day itself is not another pre-wedding shoot, but a time to capture more natural interactions among people through the lens of my camera.

The venue chosen for the dinner banquet was Grand Hyatt, a very beautiful and grand location. Both parents gave their speeches and the one that touched me the most was when Davina’s father reminisced the time when he brought his beloved daughter to the park for play time and how time has past and he is giving her away to Roger now. A lot of feelings were expressed on that night especially when the newlyweds had their first dance.

It was a fulfilling day to be able to celebrate the joy among Davina and Roger, and from the bottom of my heart, I would like to wish them a lifetime of happiness!

I guess it’s not a surprise that other than wedding shoots, I also do maternity and family shoots as well. In this series of photo, I am honored to be able to join Catherine, Eric and their little one in capturing these beautiful moments for them.

Catherine and Eric first approached me a couple of years ago to be their wedding photographer, and now 2 years down the road, the happy couple are preparing to welcome their second child! I was really touched as I felt like I was a part of their family and witnessed all these special moments with them. From the time they got married, till they had their first child, and now second, I was there to commemorate these special events in their lives.

Traditionally, I believe some families might prefer to have their family portraits taken in a studio with backdrops in a more conventional style. However, it does not always need to be this way, and just like Catherine’s case, the whole shoot was taken at Cyberport, a place that I personally like and frequently visit.

One of the pros of doing these outdoors shoots is that the outcome of the photos are more life-oriented and natural. There was plenty of open space and luscious greenery so their baby daughter was able to run around freely and enjoy the beautiful weather, instead of trying to keep still for the shoot.

I thoroughly enjoyed shooting Catherine and Eric’s family, and am glad I had the chance to be a part in capturing these moments for them as they proceed to their next phase in life!

I’ve realized lately that newlyweds prefer half day or simpler weddings maybe because its more comfortable and relaxing for them, and it wouldn’t take up too much time. It seems like this kind of trend has been going on lately and this was what Donna and Angus chose as well.

The wedding was held at 1881 Hullett house, a former Marine Police Headquarters Compound and also one of the four oldest government buildings in Hong Kong. The building itself exudes history and character, so there was no need for more complex decorations but just simple DIY items that complement the atmosphere just right.

Donna and Angus decided to have an intimate wedding, inviting only their very close family and friends. Despite it being a simple and small one, it still touched the hearts of everyone especially when Angus talked about his relationship with Donna, about how they met and how they kept their relationship going strong.

This was one of my favorites weddings, and I felt like there was no need for big shows or extravagant settings because it’s always the little things that count. At the end of the day, all that matters is the love and memories created.
