Karrie . Matthew’s Wedding@Hyatt Regency Hotel, K11 – When East Meets West

Although many couples dream of a beautiful summer wedding, it is interesting that in Hong Kong, the summer is actually the low season for weddings! This is probably because it is too hot and sweaty to be in wedding gowns and tuxedos in the heat, and summer is also the peak season for typhoons. However, this summer I’ve still completed a few wedding shoots that I enjoyed a lot. One of the couples who got married this summer was Karrie and Matthew, who live in the US and decided to have their wedding in Hong Kong to share their big day with their family and friends.

I have actually never met this couple before the actual wedding, and we had been communicating through email for months before. I’m so glad and honoured to have gained their trust and be chosen as their wedding photographer!

Many people would relate a romantic wedding to western-style ones with big wedding gowns and iconic churches. However, Hong Kong-style weddings are actually very special, with a fusion of eastern and western elements. In Karrie and Matthew’s wedding, they followed the Chinese tradition of playing games with the bridesmaids when the groom picked up the bride in the morning, while the rest of the wedding was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, K11 in the afternoon and evening. There really is no need for a full-on western wedding for this big day to be romantic and special!

I feel that I’m really lucky to be a wedding photographer in Hong Kong because I get to experience two different sets of traditions, in one day, with the same couple! This makes every wedding even more interesting and unforgettable for me.
